Microsoft Office 2007 New File Formats

Microsoft Office 2007 introduces new file formats (such as .docx, .xlsx, .pptm). Although an update is available for older versions of Microsoft Office to open these files, in many environments where you need to share documents with others, it will be preferable to configure Microsoft Office 2007 to use the old format.

Microsoft Office Word 2007

  1. Click the Office icon in the top left:

  2. Choose Word Options.

  3. Click Save in the options to the left.

  4. Set Save files in this format to Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).

  5. Click OK.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007

  1. Click the Office icon in the top left:

  2. Choose Excel Options.

  3. Click Save in the options to the left.

  4. Set Save files in this format to Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls).

  5. Click OK.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007

  1. Click the Office icon in the top left:

  2. Choose PowerPoint Options.

  3. Click Save in the options to the left.

  4. Set Save files in this format to PowerPoint Presentation 97-2003.

  5. Click OK.

Older Versions of Office

If you need to open an Office 2007 file in Office 2000/XP/2003, and cannot save the original file in an older format, download and install the Compatibility Pack.
