Microsoft Outlook: Cannot Open .MSG Files

When double-clicking .MSG (email message) files, nothing happens, or the Outlook window opens very quickly and closes.

This may occur if a version of Google Desktop prior to 5.6.0711.24354 is installed.

To fix, update Google Desktop to the latest version.

Alternatively, to disable the Google Desktop add-in:

  1. In Outlook, from the Tools menu, choose Options.

  2. Click the Other tab.

  3. Click Advanced Options.

  4. Click Add-In Manager.

  5. Untick Google Desktop Search Outlook Addin.

  6. Click OK to close the Add-In Manager dialog.

  7. Click OK to close the Advanced Options dialog.

  8. Click OK to close the Options dialog.

  9. Close Outlook and re-open.
