When attempting to scan for channels using a USB TV tuner, the system reboots with a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE error.

This occurs whether using the OEM-supplied software, or Windows Media Centre. The device drivers for the tuner are included with Windows (as opposed to being OEM drivers).

This may happen if the tuner dongle is attached to a USB 3.0 port under Windows 8.

There are a number of (possible) remedies:

Upgrade to Windows 8.1

The issue seems to be largely resolved in Windows 8.1. See Upgrading to Windows 8.1.

When the upgrade is completed, ensure all Windows 8.1 updates are installed via Windows Update, including device driver updates.

It may be necessary to uninstall the tuner device under Device Manager, and allow Windows to detect and reinstall it.

Disable USB3

To do this on a Toshiba laptop:

  1. ProgramsTOSHIBATools & UtilitiesSystem Settings.

  2. Choose USB on the left-hand side

  3. Switch Internal USB 3.0 Controller to Disabled.

  4. Allow the system to reboot.

  5. Uninstall the Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller device, and let Windows re-detect what is now a USB 2.0 controller.

However, this technique may result in some non-functioning USB ports. It may work best if the USB 3.0 ports are disabled in the machine's BIOS before Windows 8 is installed.

Use Intel Drivers

Another technique is to replace the Microsoft USB 3.0 controller drivers with drivers provided by Intel. However, Intel's drivers are only provided for Windows 7, so there is a lengthy process to force the drivers to install as follows: (NB this is highly technical).
