Securing Twitter Accounts

Twitter allows apps to access a Twitter account through a secret token code, which survives a password reset. If you change your Twitter password, any new apps must be granted access to the token via the password, but any existing apps with access will continue to have access even if the password is changed. Thus it is important, when securing a Twitter account, and particularly if a device (smartphone etc) has been stolen or lost, that all access to the Twitter account is revoked.

To secure the Twitter account:

  1. Log in to your account at http://twitter.com.

  2. Go to https://twitter.com/settings/password and change your password.

Be sure to use a complex password, and do not use any password you use for any other service.

  3. Go to https://twitter.com/settings/applications, and revoke access for all apps.

  4. You can now use the new password to log into Twitter from the various apps that need it.
