Certificate Errors Using 2Wire Router

When using a 2Wire router device, you may receive intermittent certificate errors:

The certificate being used for the communication turns out to be from the router itself:

(gateway.2wire.net will resolve to the address of the router itself, usually 10.0.0.138.)

The explanation for this behaviour is unclear. Possibly the device is dropping packets or sporadically failing to resolve DNS correctly.
