Changing the Default Printer Using DefPtr

Microsoft provided a tool called DefPtr as part of the Windows NT Resource Kit, although it works in all versions of Windows.

Installing DefPtr

Download the following file: DEFPTR.EXE and save it to the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

The next time you login or reboot the tool will run automatically and you will see a printer icon in the taskbar.

Changing the Default Printer

1. Right-click the printer icon in the taskbar.

   A list of installed printers will be displayed.

2. Choose the printer you wish to select as the default printer.

   The change may take a few seconds to take effect.
