Windows 8.1 — Error 0x80240031 Upgrading from Windows 8

When attempting to upgrade from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 using the Store, the process downloads the files but then fails to install, with “This application wasn't installed - view details” and shows error code 0x80240031.

One way to work around this error is to upgrade to Windows 8.1 using install media.

1. Use the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool to download and create media to a USB drive.

2. Run Setup.exe from the USB drive.

This process upgrades Windows 8 to 8.1 and retains your settings and product key validation.
