Error Mounting Bitlocker-Encrypted Disk Drive

When attempting to mount a disk drive encrypted with Bitlocker, you receive the following error after entering the password or unlock code: “Unable to complete the requested operation because of either a catastrophic media failure or a data structure corruption on the disk”.

This may occur if the drive was encrypted using Windows 10 version 1511, which introduced support for the XTS-AES algorithm. In this case the drive can only be decrypted on Windows 10 version 1511 or later.
