Disabling User Account Control (UAC)

Windows Vista/2008 contain a security mechanism called User Account Control (UAC), which prompts the user to confirm actions which require administrative access, even if the user has local administrator privileges. This is designed to hinder malicious software from having gaining high-level access to the operating system.

However, UAC can interfere with legacy applications which may require administrative access for normal operation. Windows Vista/2008 provide a function to run applications as Administrator, but this is not always appropriate because the process will not have access to mapped drives. Thus disabling UAC may be required.

The process is:

1. Click Start: .

2. Choose Control Panel.

3. Click Classic View (if not already).

4. Double-click User Accounts.

5. Click Turn User Account Control on or off.

6. Click Continue when prompted by the User Account Control dialog.

7. Untick Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and click OK.

8. Click Restart Now for the changes to take effect.
