Cannot Upgrade Vista with FrontPage Server Extensions

When attempting to upgrade Windows Vista Business to Windows Vista Ultimate, the installer only offers the “Clean Install” option, and displays the following message: “Setup has detected that FrontPage Server Extensions is installed on this computer. To upgrade your server, uninstall this component”.

However, there is no option in Programs and Features in the Control Panel to uninstall any FrontPage Server Extensions components.

This may be worked around by renaming a registry key temporarily.

  1. Open Registry Editor.

  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE → Software → Microsoft → Shared Tools → Web Server Extensions.

  3. In the left-hand pane, click Web Server Extensions.

  4. Press F2 to rename.

  5. Place an “x” in front of the key name so it becomes xWeb Server Extensions.

The upgrade may now be performed.

Rename the key when the upgrade is completed.

Another location that may need to be temporarily renamed is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions
