Resolving STOP 0xCF Errors

STOP 0x000000CF (TERMINAL_SERVER_DRIVER_MADE_INCORRECT_MEMORY_REFERENCE) is essentially a video driver issue that may occur when rebooting a machine from or after a Remote Desktop session.

The general remedy is as follows:

  1. Check Windows Update for an updated video driver.

  2. If none, or if problem persists, check the graphics vendor or PC vendor website for updated drivers.

  3. If none, or if problem persists, uninstall the video driver, uninstall all the companion software and reboot.

Upon restarting, the system may automatically reinstall the driver or may prompt for the source files.

  4. If this doesn't help, install an older video driver.
