Upgrading to Windows 7

If you purchased a machine which shipped with Windows Vista, but also included Windows XP Downgrade media, and you installed XP instead, the machine will qualify for the upgrade, although you will need to perform a full (clean) install as Windows XP cannot be upgraded directly to Windows 7. However, if you purchased a machine which was preinstalled with Windows XP then it does not qualify.

Upgrade orders must be completed before February 15, 2010.

To order, visit the appropriate website for your PC manufacturer:

Installation Notes — Toshiba

The Toshiba-supplied Windows 7 upgrade media includes an Upgrade Wizard, which first uninstalls older incompatible Toshiba applets, upgrades the BIOS (if required), then installs Windows 7, and installs updated Toshiba applets. The upgrade wizard downloads the necessary software to C:ProgramData\Toshiba\TOSHIBASEVENCOMP. The download is approximately 500Mb depending on machine.

One of the components uninstalled by the Toshiba wizard is the network adaptor driver (usually Marvell). This means that the upgrade cannot be performed via Remote Desktop. However, the wireless network adaptor driver is left intact, so if you can establish a connection via wireless before starting the upgrade, it can be done remotely.

Some systems need to have the product key validated twice. After validating, reboot to ensure the validation has stuck.
