STOP in NETIO.SYS When Using Explorer

When using Windows Explorer, the system generates a STOP error 0x000000D1 (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) in NETIO.SYS (or sometimes TCPIP.SYS).

If you disconnect the network cable, Windows Explorer does not generate the error.

This was observed in the following scenario:

  • Laptop with Atheros AR8131 network adaptor, Jumbo Frames enabled;

  • Laptop with Marvell Yukon 88E8072 network adaptor, Jumbo Frames disabled;

  • Gigabit switch, Jumbo Frames capable.

When Jumbo Frames was enabled on the second laptop, the first laptop would generate a STOP 0x000000D1 whenever opening Windows Explorer, whether or not Explorer was explicitly trying to connect to a resource on the second machine. Accessing the second machine machine via a mapped drive at the command prompt did not generate an error. Internet Explorer and other network-enabled applications operated normally. The second machine was able to browse the first machine without any trouble.

When Jumbo Frames was disabled on either machine, or one machine was attached to non-Gigabit hardware, the problem did not occur.
