iPhone/iPad Unable To Install MTP USB Device, Cannot Browse Camera Roll

This article is intended for a technical audience.

When attaching an iPhone/iPad, Windows may prompt that it is unable to install the device. In Device Manager, several devices appear under Portable Devices such as MTP USB Device, WPD FileSystem Volume Driver, but the drivers cannot start.

Furthermore, it is not possible to browse the device's Camera Roll via Windows Explorer.

One remedy for this issue is:

  1. Close iTunes if it is open.

  2. Uninstall the various failed drivers from Device Manager.

  3. Using Registry Editor, browse to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A}.

  4. Rename the key UpperFilters to something else, say UpperFiltersX.

  5. In Device Manager, choose Scan For Hardware Changes.

The iPhone/iPad should then appear correctly and Windows will allow browsing of the Camera Roll.

If iTunes recognises the iPhone/iPad correctly, but the Camera Roll is not visible in Explorer:

  1. Close iTunes if it is open.

  2. In Device Manager, remove the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver from under Universal Serial Bus Drivers.

  3. Choose Scan For Hardware Changes.

The iPhone/iPad should appear under Portable Devices.
